Ilam: the Tea Gardens of Eastern Nepal

3 min readJuly 5, 2026Dimitris

Ilam is Nepal's green side. Far from the classic Kathmandu - Pokhara - Chitwan route, in the country's east, the hills fill with tea gardens, mist, small roads and a feeling closer to Darjeeling. It is a destination for travellers with time, or those returning to Nepal for a second trip and wanting something quieter.

It is not an easy add-on to a short first journey. That is exactly why it matters: it shows that Nepal is not only 8,000-metre peaks and valley temples. It is also eastern hills, tea, villages and gentle daily life.

Kanyam, Antu Danda and Tea Gardens

The region's most photogenic image is the tea gardens around Kanyam, with rows of plants rippling over the hills. You walk among the plantations, taste local tea and see a Nepal that feels less rugged and more humid, green and almost hypnotic.

Antu Danda is known for sunrise, with views over the hills and, when weather allows, towards the Kanchenjunga region. As with every Nepali viewpoint, nothing is guaranteed: cloud and mist are part of Ilam's character. Go for the atmosphere, not only for one photograph.

How to Get There and Who It Suits

Ilam needs planning. You usually arrive with a flight to the eastern Terai and a road transfer into the hills, or by a long overland journey. I would not put it in a classic 10-day first trip, where priorities are Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and maybe Lumbini. I would include it in a more specific programme for slow travel, photography, tea and eastern Nepal.

If you want to see "another Nepal", Ilam is a strong card. It can become part of an Elysian Himalaya tailor-made trip for travellers not looking for a checklist, but texture, locality and time.

  • No. It is in eastern Nepal and needs a flight/road combination or a dedicated itinerary. It does not fit easily into a short first trip.
