Bhaktapur: Nepal’s Medieval City

3 min readJuly 5, 2026Dimitris

Bhaktapur is where the Kathmandu Valley still remembers its medieval rhythm. Unlike the noisy centre of the capital, here you walk among red brick, carved wooden windows, courtyards, pagoda temples and craftspeople still practising skills passed down for centuries. It is one of the valley's three royal cities and part of the UNESCO-listed Kathmandu Valley, together with Kathmandu and Patan.

For travellers from Greece, Bhaktapur is one of the easiest and strongest half-day or full-day trips. It lies east of Kathmandu, roughly 13 km from the centre, and combines beautifully with Changu Narayan temple or an overnight in Nagarkot for a Himalayan sunrise. If you only have a few days in Nepal, do not leave it out.

What to See in Bhaktapur

The visit begins at Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the old royal square. Here stand the 55-Window Palace, the Golden Gate and temples restored after the 2015 earthquake. A few minutes away, in Taumadhi Square, rises Nyatapola, the five-tier pagoda and one of the most imposing monuments of Nepali architecture.

Continue to Pottery Square. Clay pots dry in the sun, wheels turn in small workshops, and daily life feels like an open-air museum. Bhaktapur is not just a sight; it is a living town. Walk slowly, enter the lanes and stop for juju dhau, the city's famous "king curd".

Practicalities: Access, Cost and Season

From Thamel or central Kathmandu, a taxi usually takes 45-75 minutes depending on traffic. A private car with driver is more comfortable if you want to continue to Changu Narayan or Nagarkot. The foreign-visitor ticket is one of the valley's higher ones, around 1,800 NPR, but it covers the whole old city. Keep cash in rupees.

The best months are October-November and March-April, when the sky is clear and walking is comfortable. During the monsoon the town is still beautiful, but the brick squares can be slippery and mountain views disappear into cloud. If you visit in summer, start early and carry a rain jacket.

A Day Plan from Kathmandu

A strong plan: leave Kathmandu at 08:00, reach Bhaktapur before the square fills up, see Durbar Square and Taumadhi by midday, eat a Newari lunch, then walk Pottery Square and the old lanes in the afternoon. To make it fuller, continue to Changu Narayan and then Nagarkot for sunset or an overnight stay. For a quieter premium version, Elysian Himalaya can turn it into a private guided day with context, pacing and no rush.
