Janakpur: the City of Sita and Mithila Culture

3 min readJuly 5, 2026Dimitris

Janakpur shows a different Nepal from the one most travellers imagine. It is not Himalaya, not Kathmandu Valley, not Pokhara lake. It is the Terai: flat land, heat, bicycles, pilgrims, Indian influence and Mithila culture, with its colourful paintings and Ramayana stories.

The city is sacred in Hindu tradition because it is linked with Sita, wife of Rama. The centre of the experience is Janaki Mandir, the white palace-like temple that dominates the town. For a traveller who has already seen Lumbini or Kathmandu's temples, Janakpur adds another religious world: flatter, more Indian, more popular in feeling.

Janaki Mandir and the Sacred Ponds

Janaki Mandir is dedicated to Sita and is one of southern Nepal's most recognisable buildings. Its architecture blends Rajput and Mughal elements, with white facades, arches, towers and courtyards. Go early in the morning or late afternoon, when pilgrim movement gives the space life and the light is softer.

Around the city are sacred ponds such as Ganga Sagar and Dhanush Sagar, important for rituals and festivals. Janakpur is not just "enter the temple and leave". It rewards walking, observing and respecting the rhythm of pilgrimage.

Mithila Art and Festivals

The region is known for Mithila painting, with geometric motifs, strong colours, deities, animals and scenes of daily life. If you want a meaningful souvenir, look for a local workshop or cooperative. Major festivals such as Vivah Panchami, Ram Navami and Chhath bring thousands of people to the city and completely change its atmosphere.

How to Include It

Janakpur needs a conscious choice. A flight from Kathmandu makes it easier, while overland distances are long and tiring. It can combine with Lumbini and other Terai stops, but not casually. If you want a journey deeper than the classic Kathmandu-Pokhara-Chitwan triangle, talk to us: with Dimitris and Elysian Himalaya, it can become part of a more cultural, tailor-made Nepal.
